چکیده

The sensitivity of imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes (IACTs) in TeV γ-ray observations reachs its maximum at small zenith angles (Θ ≤ 30◦) which provide the minimum attainable energy threshold of an instrument. However, for a specific telescope site a number of γ-ray sources, or source candidates, can only be observed at much larger zenith angles (Θ ≤ 60◦). Moreover the observations at large zenith angles allow to extend the observation time window for any object seen at small zenith angles, as well as to enlarge the dynamic energy range of an instrument towards the highest observable energies of γ-rays. Based on Monte Carlo simulations we present here the results on the sensitivity of a stereoscopic system of 5 IACTs in observations at large zenith angles. We point out some important parameters of the telescope design which could substantially improve the efficiency of such observations with forthcoming IACT arrays like CANGAROO III, HESS and VERITAS. The Energy Spectrum of TeV Gamma-Rays from the Crab Nebula

The imaging atmospheric Čerenkov technique has been successfully used for observations of the Crab Nebula in the TeV energy range. However the Crab Nebula energy spectra, measured by several groups, still differ noticeably in power-law index as well as in absolute -ray flux. The HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes has been used for long-term observations of th...

Monte Carlo studies on the sensitivity of the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescope system in observations of extended γ-ray sources

In this paper, we present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of atmospheric showers induced by diffuse γ-rays as detected by the high-energy gamma-ray astronomy (HEGRA) system of five imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes (IACTs). We have investigated the sensitivity of observations on extended γ-ray emission over the entire field of view of the instrument. We discuss a technique to searc...

Atmospheric Čerenkov Telescopes: A Next-Generation Detector for Ground-Based High Energy Gamma-ray Astronomy

The construction of the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System), a superior system of four 12 m imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes, has been completed recently in the Namib desert close to Windhoek, at 1800 m above sea level. This new generation of ground-based gamma-ray detectors has an energy threshold of about 100 GeV in observations at zenith and a sensitivity of about 1% Crab flux ...

On design studies for the future 50 GeV arrays of imaging air Čerenkov telescopes

Arrays of imaging air Čerenkov telescopes (IACTs) like VERITAS, HESS have been recently proposed as the instruments of the next generation for ground based very high energy γ-ray astronomy invading into 50-100 GeV energy range. Here we present results of design studies for the future IACT arrays which have been performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We studied different trigger strategi...

Design Study of CANGAROO-III, Stereoscopic Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes for sub-TeV Gamma-ray Detection

CANGAROO-III is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) array of four 10 m telescopes for very high energy (sub-TeV) gamma-ray astronomy. A design study of Preprint submitted to Elsevier Preprint 1 August 2001 the CANGAROO-III telescope system was carried out using the Monte Carlo technique in order to optimize the pixel size and the telescope spacing. Studies were also made of observ...
